Summer course at CEPT, Ahmedabad
June 2024
The final objective of the course was to reach a disabled audience, who due to their disabilities, are unable to connect with Ahmedabad. This will help students create their own cultural identity, immerse themselves within the city they have selected to spend formative years of their lives in, and interact with a section of society who are unable to their space but are confined somewhere else. It will help realise the core challenges and seek solutions to create a safe, empathetic and happy world.
A set of teaching and learning materials (TLM) was designed by the students. They were inspired by the heritage structures, their designs and the communities and their way of life around them. Since the disabled audience would find it difficult to navigate the narrow and crowded lanes of old Ahmedabad, the students took upon them the responsibility to bring the experience of the old city into the Foundation’s new school campus at Maninagar East. They designed:
Textile (based) shading device covering the pathway from classrooms to toilet and drinking water area, using handmade cotton fabric
Lampshades as educational and entertainment resource: teaching how light can be directed to portray alphabets, numbers and shapes
Blocks with 15 individual designs that could be used for printing, stacking and build muscle strength
The students transformed the school into a happy and safe space where even the families of the children bonded, an extra benefit of the course.
